IN PICTURES: MY MEMORIES OF BLONDIE, 1978

5 March 1978

I had just bought my first camera, a hulking 6×6 Mamayaflex, hardly something concealed under a jacket and certainly not ideal for performance photography. Undaunted, I got myself to the front, I think I was actually leaning against the stage, and took a few practice shots of the support act. When Blondie exploded on stage, all hell broke loose and trying to hold the camera steady, while all around me was going crazy, was quite a challenge…

Most of the images from that gig are all about the energy of the band, but it’s the contrasting tranquillity of this shot of Debbie Harry, sat on the floor that makes this one of my favourites, not just of Blondie, but of all the gigs I’ve ever shot.
